4 Ways To Improve Concentration At Work

Do you feel you are losing concentration at work? Loss of concentration at work may materialize in various ways, from getting preoccupied with unnecessary things to facing work-related issues. Concentration is the ability to focus entirely on a single task. It enables one to accomplish tasks effectively within a short time, consequently boosting work performance. Here are four ways to improve concentration at work;

1.    Exercise Regularly

It is scientifically proven that physical exercise releases a hormone called endorphins which helps improve one’s mood. In addition, exercise stimulates the production of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) which sharpens memory and concentration. Working out regularly can significantly boost your BDNF.

2.    Get Adequate Sleep

Research shows that inadequate sleep greatly hinders your ability to focus on work. The Global Sleep Survey in 2019 revealed that adults worldwide usually get an average of 7 hours of sleep on weeknights instead of 8 hours. Inadequate sleep can be harmful to your concentration levels. You can ensure that you are getting enough sleep by installing room darkening lights to enhance rest; minimizing daytime naps to half an hour; having a fixed time for sleeping and waking up.

3.    Train Your Brain

The brain is like a muscle, the more it is stretched, the more it adapts to handle more. You can train your body muscle to carry a 200-pound weight by starting with a 50-pound weight and progressively adding more weight. In correspondence, one can train their brain to concentrate on work for 3 hours straight by starting with 1 hour. This can be a good workout program for the brain.

4.    Eliminate Distraction

Avoiding unnecessary disturbances is knowing what to give your attention to. Examples of distractions around the workplace are noisy machines and disturbing colleagues. You can eliminate distraction by switching off desktop notifications, closing your office door to prevent unwanted disturbances and boost your focus on the work at hand, and turning your cell phone into silent mode.
